What Do You Depend On? A One-Page Dependency Check for Brokers

Ask a business owner what a flood would do to their building and you will get a detailed answer. Ask what happens if their biggest supplier stops shipping, their only rail line washes out, or the one employee who holds the licenses walks away, and the room gets quieter. That gap is where losses hide.

It is the gap Lloyd’s has been pointing at. Emma Loynes, Lloyd’s chief executive for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, told brokers at the NIBA Convention on the Gold Coast that advice built only around what a client owns is likely to miss much of what could hurt them. Her remedy was to map what a business depends on — suppliers, routes, platforms, people — well ahead of renewal, while there is still time to fix what the map exposes. “Risk doesn’t sit neatly in separate boxes anymore,” she said.

This one-page checklist turns that argument into a meeting. It is built for commercial brokers — especially those carrying contractor and operator books — to run with a client 60 to 90 days before renewal, when a fragile answer can still become a second source, a written-down procedure, or a coverage change instead of a claim story.

The page walks seven dependency families: suppliers and materials, utilities and the site, customers and revenue, people, technology and platforms, logistics and routes, and money. Each family is a few plain questions a broker can ask across the table, plus the fragile answer that gives the exposure away. The closing block does the renewal work: every “only one” on the page is a dependency the current program likely prices as if it did not exist, and the answers sort into what to fix before renewal and what to insure — contingent business interruption included.

Loynes closed her keynote with the broker’s side of the AI era: “A machine can identify a pattern, but only the broker can decide whether it matters for this business, in this market, in this moment.” This page is that decision, on paper.
